I-91 Resurfacing Bridge and Safety Improvements, Hartford, CT - ConnDOT

This project intends to replace the existing wearing surface on I-91, north of the I-84 interchange in Hartford, for a length of approximately 5.8 miles. This entails up to four travel lanes, H.O.V. lanes, and ramps in each direction. There will be over 900 drainage structures that will be reset or replaced on the project. There are 27 bridges within the project limits with over 36,000 square yards of deck area. After concrete patching, the bridge decks will be membrane waterproofed and overlaid with 5000 tons of superpave. Bridge decks joints will be replaced with asphaltic plug joints. High traffic volume (130,000+ ADT) in the area will add to the difficulty of this project. Garg was responsible for performing construction inspection services for this project.

Additional project tasks included:

  • Inspection of night milling and paving
  • Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) in a highly congested area
  • Coordination of traveler information with ConnDOT Highway Operations
  • First construction project in the state fully viewable live on the  internet
  • Approval of the contractor’s superpave mix at setup (over 100,000 tons on the   roadway)
  • Internet views of the project being used by Massachusetts Highway Department and its consultants as a training tool for MPT protocol
  • One of the first uses of wedge joints to expedite resurfacing on a major highway in CT
  • Use of the SiteManager document control system
  • $18 million of construction in one construction season
