Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System

The Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System (SNJLRTS) provides new light rail transit service from Trenton to Camden along the Delaware River.  Advanced, articulated diesel light rail vehicles travel along an augmented freight right-of-way.  The 34-mile system includes 20 stations, 55 automatic microprocessor controlled grade crossings, and 20 microprocessor controlled interlockings.  GCS was responsible for the testing and commissioning of signaling and communications for this project.

The major tasks of the project included:

  • Software testing of all interlockings from the control center
  • Testing of the interlocking system in local and remote models
  • Automatic route selection tests for normal and reverse traffic
  • Review and approval of protocol for various tests of signaling equipment, switch machine operation, track circuits, signals and interlocking, fiber optic communication system and grade crossings at site and from the operations control center
  • Monitoring of tests, analysis of test results, and approval
  • Integration tests for the associated subsystems (track, signaling, grade crossing equipment, etc
  • Emergency communication facilities
  • Radio coverage for NJT and CONRAIL radio network along the transit line
  • Aspect control and visibility of signals
