The projects involved upgrading the track system to improve the operational speeds.  The system can now meet Class 6-7 track requirements for travel speeds up to 110 mph.  This major upgrade was a significant component in the Northeast Corridor Improvements from Washington to Boston.  Most of the work in this project revolved around the physical upgrades to the track bed including alignment, ballast upgrade, and installation of concrete railroad ties.  GCS provided construction inspection services to CTDOT for the project.

The major tasks of the project included:
  • Force account management
  • Full-time construction supervision/inspection of various activities
  • Testing and certification of materials to be used on site
  • Revision of the original construction drawings (plans), as required
  • Review of contractor claims
  • Necessary field density tests
  • Coordination and implementation of soils and foundation determinations, soil mechanics, etc.
  • Preparation and submission of construction orders and estimates for approval
  • Preparation of "as-built" CAD drawings
  • Monitoring of compliance of contract specifications and CTDOT guidelines/codes
