Metro North Railroad Biennial Bridge Inspection - ConnDOT

GCS performed the biennial safety inspection of one hundred eighty-nine (189) railroad bridges in southwestern Connecticut on the Metro North Railroad (MNRR) mainline from the New York state line to New Haven and its three branch lines:  New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury.  The inspections were performed in accordance with AREMA, AASHTO, Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), and the CTDOT Bridge Inspection Manual.

The major tasks of the project included:

• Plan, schedule and coordinate each bridge inspection with CTDOT, MNRR, local agencies and local police forces
• Perform routine or in-depth inspections of each bridge to determine the structure’s physical condition
• 100% hands-on inspection of any fracture critical members and/or fatigue prone details of the bridge
• Document the deficiencies of the bridge with field notes, measurements, and photographs
• Update condition evaluation and inventory data
• Perform analysis and evaluation of structural load capacity, as field conditions dictate
• Prepare maintenance recommendations, as required
• Compile all information to create a final report
